Most electronics applications need protection from electrical transients and surges of both natural and manmade origin. Various technologies exist for different types of applications which include MOVs, GDT’s combinations of the two, semiconductor TVS and ESD devices. Typically, these devices respond differently to repetitive applications of transients depending on the type of device. Additionally, the precision and accuracy of these devices vary widely. A new technology will be discussed, the snapback TVS technology, which has manifold benefits in protection of circuits in many applications.
